From Pactia to ICC: companies transforming Colombia’s energy landscape
Among the success stories is Pactia, which to date has installed more than 2,300 solar panels, reaching a generation capacity of 1,213 kWp. This translates into energy savings of more than 1.9 million kWh per year and economic savings of more than $200 million.
Colombia faces one of the most complex energy challenges in its recent history. With an electricity matrix that depends 68% on hydroelectric generation – highly vulnerable to climatic phenomena such as El Niño – and natural gas reserves in decline (barely 2.3 TPC for five years), the country is dangerously close to a crisis scenario.
In this context, energy efficiency and renewable energies are no longer simply alternatives but have become key survival strategies, especially for the main energy consumers: companies.
As Santiago Uribe, co-founder and marketing and sales manager of Azimut Energía, a leading company in developing energy efficiency projects for different industrial sectors, points out: “Colombian companies today have the historic opportunity to transform this crisis into a competitive advantage. Energy efficiency can reduce operating costs by up to 30%, while building resilience to price volatility.
This is already being worked on by some companies in the country that have decided to lead energy generation and efficiency projects. Uribe highlights 3 success stories that have joined the green wave and seek to contribute to the transformation of the country’s energy landscape:
Pactia: efficiency in large format
Pactia, one of the country’s largest real estate funds, has been developing a robust energy efficiency strategy for more than five years in several of its properties, including shopping centers, office buildings and logistics spaces.
Thanks to the installation of more than 2,300 solar panels with a generating capacity of 1,213 kWp, and as part of their zero carbon strategy, they have managed to generate more than 1,900,000 kWh per year from renewable energy sources. This represents savings of more than $200 million annually and a reduction of more than 1,000 tons of CO₂eq, which is the equivalent of planting more than 17,000 trees.
